I've been thinking about buying a Japanese import for a while because they often come with great specifications, lower mileage, and a reputation for reliability. On paper, they seem like an excellent value. However, after speaking to a few owners, I've realized there are several extra costs that don't always get mentioned.

If you're researching Japanese car brands in UK, it's worth looking beyond the purchase price and considering the long-term ownership experience.

Some of the hidden costs I've come across include:

  • Higher insurance premiums for certain imported models.

  • Replacement parts that may need to be ordered from Japan, leading to higher prices and longer waiting times.

  • Specialist servicing if your local garage isn't familiar with imported vehicles.

  • Speedometer or lighting modifications required to meet UK regulations.

  • Slightly higher shipping costs for rare components if repairs are needed.

  • Lower resale demand for some niche imports compared with UK-market equivalents.

That said, plenty of owners still say the benefits outweigh these drawbacks. Many imports are exceptionally well maintained, offer better equipment levels, and can be more interesting to own than the standard UK versions.

I'm curious to hear from people with first-hand experience. Have the extra costs been manageable, or have there been any unexpected expenses that caught you by surprise? Are there any specific models you'd recommend or avoid for someone considering their first Japanese import in the UK?
