How important is REM sleep for workout recovery?

I’ve been focusing more on recovery lately and started tracking my sleep alongside my workouts. One thing that keeps coming up is REM sleep, but I’m still trying to understand how it actually affects recovery and energy levels. I found a good explanation about what is rem sleep while reading about sleep cycles and it got me curious. Does anyone here track their sleep stages or notice performance differences based on sleep quality?
